Riksbyggen

Solar Egg turnerar jorden runt!

Riksbyggen

Solar Egg

Solar Egg goes around the world! Background: Around 6,000 people had to move as LKAB, Sweden's largest mining company, needs more land in the arctic city of Kiruna. To put it bluntly, an entire town is forced to move. By 2035, the current town center will be decommissioned, and the new one will be developed - three kilometers to the east.

Riksbyggen, one of Sweden's largest housing companies, wanted to help shape the housing of the future Kiruna. But change is not always popular - moving houses and community is both disruptive and difficult. Our mission was to create a positive movement for change and a symbol to gather around and be proud of.

The solution was a movable sauna, in keeping with local tradition but with a sparkling look. The artist duo Bigert and Bergström were hired for the conception. The rest is history - the Solar Egg sauna has gone viral and tours the world. The public sauna project for Riksbyggen in Kiruna makes both the public and the art, design, and architecture enthusiasts roll over. The Solar Egg sauna has been on show in Kiruna, Paris, Minneapolis, Rättvik, Copenhagen, Skellefteå and Stockholm. If you get the chance, try it for your yourself.
