Från giftig ödemark till plats för heta samtal! På det gamla industriområdet Scharins i Skellefteå har en av Västerbottens mest förorenade platser blivit WasteLand Climate Action Park. En ny offentlig park för konst, klimatdialog och framtidens stadsutveckling.
I centrum står Crystal Sauna av Bigert & Bergström, en fullt fungerande bastuskulptur formad som en gigantisk rosa litiumkristall. Fasaden speglar älven, skogen och spår av den industrihistoria som platsen bär på. I bastun väntar en varm trägrotta och ett bastuaggregat med form efter ett förhistoriskt flintaverktyg. Det är offentlig konst, häftig arkitektur, ny teknik och urgammal ritual i ett.
WasteLand öppnade i samband med Society Expo 2026. Under parollen ”From Waste to Promise” är parken en fysisk berättelse om sanering, omställning och nya sätt att leva tillsammans. Här finns flera konstnärliga och arkitektoniska verk, bland annat Ingela Ihrmans Landskapet kom först, Bigert & Bergströms Broken Greenhouse, Rundgång, en 400 meter lång cirkel i slyskogen, ett utsiktstorn, en lekotop och platser för samtal, lek och reflektion.
Futurniture har utvecklat koncept, berättelse, kommunikation, PR och grafisk form för WasteLand och Crystal Sauna. Från idén om en klimatpark på ett historiskt ödeland till pressarbete, texter, budskap och lansering i samband med Society Expo.

WasteLand + Crystal Sauna
From toxic wasteland to conversation hotspot! At the old Scharins industrial site in Skellefteå, one of Västerbotten’s most contaminated areas has been transformed into the WasteLand Climate Action Park. A new public park dedicated to art, climate dialogue, and the urban development of tomorrow.
At its heart stands the Crystal Sauna by Bigert & Bergström, a fully functioning sauna sculpture shaped like a giant pink lithium crystal. Its facade reflects the river, the forest, and the traces of industrial history embedded in the landscape. Inside, a warm wooden cave awaits, complete with a sauna heater modeled after a prehistoric flint tool. It is public art, striking architecture, new technology, and ancient ritual all rolled into one.
WasteLand opened in conjunction with Society Expo 2026. Under the banner ”From Waste to Promise,” the park serves as a physical narrative of remediation, transition, and new ways of living together. The area features several artistic and architectural installations, including Ingela Ihrman’s The Landscape Came First, Bigert & Bergström’s Broken Greenhouse, and Rundgång, the 400-meter-long circular path weaving through the woodland. Visitors can also explore a viewing tower, a "playtope" (play landscape), and dedicated spaces for conversation, play, and reflection.
Futurniture has developed the concept, narrative, communication, PR, and graphic design for both WasteLand and the Crystal Sauna. This journey spanned from the initial spark of an idea for a climate park on a historic wasteland to press relations, copywriting, messaging, and the final launch at Society Expo.
